Project Duration

Overview
The USAID-funded Nepal Family Health Program (NFHP) ran from 2001-2006. The program focused on reducing fertility and protecting family health through increased use of quality family planning services and selected maternal and child health services. NFHP emphasized household and community-level services by strengthening health service delivery systems. To maximize the long-term impact, technical assistance and activities were planned and implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health. CCP developed the Radio Health Program that simultaneously reached out to Female Community Health Volunteers and the general public with mass media, community, and interpersonal communication activities.
Accomplishments
Nationally broadcast for four years, the Radio Health Program (RHP) was composed of two mutually reinforcing entertainment education weekly broadcasts linked with innovative activities for radio listeners and support materials. The radio distance education program “Sewa Nai Dharma Ho” (Service is Religion) strengthened knowledge and skills of Female Community Health Volunteers. The complementary drama serial “Gyan Na Shakti Ho” (Knowledge is Power) reached the community with family planning and maternal and child health messages.
The drama serial and materials were adapted for Maithili and Muslim cultures and languages.
Radio Listener Group activities results showed that, in one district, family planning use among listeners rose from 22% to 47%.
RHP received more than 6000 letters of support from the community.
