Nigerian
Alumni of JHU/CCP sponsored
trainings met at the Training and Conference Center in Ogere on
October 2-3, 2002.

The meeting was organized by the JHU/CCP Nigeria Country Office.
Bola Kusemiju, Country Director, and 17 additional JHU/CCP staff
were among the founding members of the Alumni Organization.
| The meeting
was also attended by JHU/CCP Deputy Director Alice Payne Merritt,
Africa Division Chief Susan Krenn, Training and Performance
Improvement Division Chief Benjamin Lozare, Senior Program
Officers Peter Roberts and Chamberlain Diala. and Training
Program Officer Arzum Ciloglu. |

| The
purpose of the meeting was to form an Alumni organization.
The group decided on the name "Health Communication Network
for Development in Nigeria" and during the two day meeting
developed a shared vision, mission, and objectives for the
association. |

In
addition, a board of trustees was appointed and association
officers were duly elected and sworn in by JHU/CCP Deputy
Director Alice Payne Merritt.

The
future plans of the Association are to ratify the newly developed
constitution, to be registered by the Nigerian government and
to organize a health communication conference for the coming year.
Shared Vision:
Through creative and effective health communication, we envision
a health competent Nigerian society where Nigerians take responsibility
for their health, have adequate knowledge of basic health promotion
and care and live within an enabling environment that provides
access to effective health care.
Mission:
To empower Nigerians to take responsibility for their health,
educate them on basic health care, and work with them as a team
to advocate for effective implementation of a national health
policy and strategies that reflect their changing needs.
Objectives:
1. To advance the development of health communication in Nigeria
through a strong network of JHU/CCP alumni serving as a crucial
resource for health communication.
2.
To build the capacity of individuals, households and communities
to design, implement and evaluate health communication programs.
3.
To advocate for policy education, implementation, and review of
health and related policies at all levels.
4.
To organize programs for sharing information, best practices and
experience among members of the network.
5.
To advocate for positive policies and legislation on health issues.
6.
To advocate for increased budget allocation and release to the
health sector as well as a more rational use of available resources.
7. To promote the inclusion of health communication curriculum
in higher educational institutions.
8. To document and disseminate the activities of the network and
its members both domestically and internationally.
9. To network with other JHU/CCP alumni in other countries to
share experiences and lessons learned.
10. To continually monitor and evaluate the activities of the
network so as to improve its effectiveness and efficiency.
