OVERVIEW:

Bangladesh Association for Social Communication (BASCOM) is an august body of communication professionals who completed the state-of-the-art Advances Workshop sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health/Center for Communication Programs (JHBSPH/CCP) and the Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs (BCCP). The idea of forming an association originated when a group of communication professionals met in June 1997 to discuss new ideas and share experiences. This group were alumni members from the previous four Advances workshops conducted under the leadership of BCCP. The participants welcomed the idea and voiced their consent to form an association of communication professionals.

BASCOMs members are communication professionals who work in the government, non-government and private sectors and play important roles in implementing various socio-economic developmental programs. A few of the programs include education, health, poverty alleviation, family planning, women empowerment and business initiatives through communication activities that include advertisement, material development, advocacy programs, market research, and social marketing.

MISSION:

BASCOMs mission is to establish effective and intensive linkages with all organizations having the need for expert input or opinion in developing behavior change communication (BCC) materials and implementing BCC programs. The objectives of the association are to foster cordial relationship among the members; assist each other in developing BCC materials/programs through mutual sharing of experiences and resources; develop a resource center for communication materials; arrange training and research facilities for BCC programs; disseminate relevant information and organize workshops/seminars on communication and development related issues. BASCOM will organize BCC exhibitions, fairs and publish a newsletter.
