Tune in to the GoodLife Game Show
The GoodLife is an overarching multimedia campaign led by Ghana Behavior Change Support (BCS) under Johns Hopkins University, Center for Communication Programs. The campaign encourages reflection about what makes life "good" and links personal happiness to the practice of healthy behaviors. It moves health messages beyond instructive commands to engaging people on issues relevant to their own daily lives.
The purpose of the GoodLife Game Show is to entertain, inform, and educate the target audience by through an exciting platform that engages and challenges the target audience to adopt health living habits.
The GoodLife Game Show is a thirteen week 30 minute TV game show in which five contestants compete for a cash prize. Contestants were selected through a process where interested persons sent their names to a short code. Contestants from the ten regions were selected and screened until five contestants were chosen.
Each episode is made up of three rounds, with each round becoming progressively harder. In round one, contestants are quizzed on basic health knowledge. During rounds two and three test contestant’s knowledge on issues within the GoodLife thematic areas: family planning, malaria, nutrition, and water and sanitation. Winners from the first ten episodes participate in the semi-finals and grand finale to compete for the ultimate prize of GHC 5,000.
At-home viewers were able to participate by answering health related questions through the GoodLife short code, accessible on all networks in Ghana, winning GoodLife branded items.
The GoodLife Game Show has just completed its first season. Based on preliminary findings and anecdotal evidence, the GoodLife Game Show was the second most watched show in the timeslot, with an upsurge in viewers from 18% share in June to 25% in July. The show also triggered an increase in the number of hits in the short code. A quick sampling indicated an increase in: brand awareness; brand interest and associations; and brand knowledge (understanding), prompting discussion of health related issues and behavior change among users.
