Jongo Love, a radio series that examines relationships and family planning in urban Kenya, has received nominations for two international media awards: an International Digital Emmy Award and a One World Media Award.
Created by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs’ (JHU∙CCP) Tupange project [1], and produced by Well Told Story, a Tupange partner and previous International Digital Emmy Award winner [1], Jongo Love has quickly gained popularity among urban Kenyan radio listeners.
“Jongo Love epitomizes the innovative approach that Tupange has used to introduce modern family planning methods in poor, urban communities across Kenya,” explains Debbie Gachuhi, Senior Regional Communication Advisor for JHU∙CCP in Kenya. “It combines a compelling serial drama with direct listener interaction opportunities, through on-air and online Facebook [1] and Twitter [2] conversation that follow each episode.”
With over 7,000 fans on Facebook, Jongo Love is creating a dynamic conversation among Kenyan youth about reproductive health, contraception and sexual relationships. The radio program is aired on seven community radio stations in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu and is listened to by thousands of people in these cities and across other parts of Kenya.
Jongo Love is one of four nominees in the Digital Program: Children and Young People International Digital Emmy Award category. It will be showcased in Cannes along with the 11 other nominees from ten countries that are competing for this year’s International Digital Emmy Awards at a special creative forum for early-stage content development for professionals from the global TV and online content industry. The International Digital Emmy Awards will be given out at an awards ceremony on April 8 in Cannes.
The One World Media Awards reward the most outstanding media coverage of the developing world. Jongo Love is one of ten nominees in the Digital Media Award category. The One World Media Awards will be given out on May 7 in London.
