Global Health: Science and Practice Journal Launch

Co-Editors-in-Chief Dr. James D. Shelton and Dr. Ronald J. Waldman will present their vision for the Journal and authors of three articles appearing in the first issue will present their findings.

About the Journal

Published by U.S. Agency for International Development, the Knowledge for Health Project at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs, and the Department of Global Health at George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, this new peer-reviewed, open-access journal particularly aims to reach those who implement and otherwise support global health programs. Recognizing that very little of the scholarly literature represents lessons learned from global health programs implemented in the field, these three institutions developed GHSP as a medium for global health professionals to validate their experiences and program results by peer reviewers and share them with the greater global health community.

GHSP strives to advance knowledge on how programs are implemented using a clear and concise communication style. “People implementing programs are busy implementing … and need efficiently packaged and thought-stimulating literature to meet their needs. So we will aim for a crisp style, one that lays out key concepts prominently,” explains James Shelton, co-Editor-in-Chief.

About the Inaugural Issue

The editors and peer reviewers have selected 13 papers for the first issue on many compelling topics of current interest to the global health community. “We aim to address those global health issues that have the most programmatic importance, global policy relevance, and potential impact, including those that may engender controversy in an engaging and sometimes provocative way,” says Ronald Waldman, co-Editor-in-Chief.

Five commentaries explore such thought-provoking topics as:

• The promise of contraceptive implants to meet growing family planning demand
• Whether antiretroviral treatment as prevention of HIV transmission will end AIDS
• The use of chlorhexidine for umbilical cord care to increase newborn survival

Seven original articles share innovative approaches and lessons learned to improve health in a broad range of fields, including:

• Reducing child undernutrition in Mozambique through a peer-to-peer behavior change communication program
• Successfully eradicating polio in India through a network of community mobilizers
