FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 5, 2005

FROM THE DIRECTOR

We at CCP are stunned by the death and destruction caused by the tsunamis that swept across multiple countries in Asia last week. The death toll and human suffering are beyond comprehension. To date, we have not learned of any deaths within the “CCP family,” but many of our colleagues are connected to families and friends experiencing this immense tragedy firsthand. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this extremely difficult time.

As a member of the Safe Drinking Water Alliance, CCP is working to get water purification packets to countries in need and will assist in the long-term rehabilitation efforts. We will keep you posted, via this website, as CCP becomes more involved in the relief effort.

If you would like to help, CCP suggests that you give to one of the organizations providing immediate assistance, such as the American Red Cross or AmeriCares. More relief organizations can be found on the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's website, which also provides a list of its experts available to discuss various public health issues related to the tsunami.

With great sympathy to all affected by this colossal disaster,

Jane Bertrand
Director, Center for Communication Programs
Professor, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
