2004 Photoshare Photo Contest Winners

1st Place photoBALTIMORE — Photoshare is pleased to announce the winners of the Second Annual International Photoshare Photo Contest! Please visit our press release online to view judges' selections and other awards.

This stunning photo of the Amazon Jungle took top prize in the contest. Caryl Feldacker submitted the 1st Place photo. Caption: In the middle of the Amazon jungle, young boys play in the setting sun as a man returns from an afternoon of fishing. In this remote location, three days from the nearest town by boat, the people depend entirely on nature to meet their daily needs for food and water. As population growth and environmental degradation threaten these areas, integrated approaches to development become necessary to protect biodiversity and promote human wellness.

Interesting facts about the contest:

  • More than 120 people from around the world participated in the contest.
  • Fifty-four percent of contest participants were based in North America while 46% participants sent photos in from all other regions of the world.
  • We received more than 400 images photographed in 70 different countries, including our first and only photos from Albania, Angola, Bahrain, Iraq, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland, West Bank and Gaza, and Zanizibar.
  • Entries were judged on the basis of content and quality by an independent panel of volunteer judges. Marshall Clarke, Shawna Gibbs, and Steven Rubin generously volunteered their time to judge entries for this year's contest. All three judges are professional freelance photographers who share an interest in international development.
  • Recipients of the Photoshare Image of the Year, Outstanding Photoshare Contributor, and Honorable Mention awards were selected by Photoshare Staff.
