Now Available: New Catalog of Materials, Communication Strategies
Designed to Help End Violence Against Women

Publication from UNIFEM, JHU/CCP Highlights Successful and Innovative Campaigns

BALTIMORE—Because a well-planned strategic communication campaign can make a difference in the fight to end violence against women, some of the most successful materials and strategies from around the world have now been collected in a new publication for professionals involved in protecting women from violence.

“Picturing a Life Free of Violence: Media and Communication Strategies to End Violence Against Women” was published recently by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) in collaboration with the Media/Materials Clearinghouse at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs (JHU/CCP). The catalog showcases materials based on the strength and consistency of message, innovation and creativity of the campaign materials, and the potential for replication in other countries and contexts. It is available online at http://www.unifem.undp.org/public/freeofviolence/index.htm

“Strategies reaching mass audiences have helped break the stigma and change the culture of quiet acceptance surrounding gender-based violence,” said UNIFEM Executive Director Noeleen Heyzer in the publication's preface. “Timely and targeted media and communications materials touch the heart as well as the mind, impact on people in profound ways, and support and empower them to create change.”

The catalog is arranged by subject area, such as Domestic Violence, Harmful Traditional Practices, Trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation, and HIV/AIDS and Violence. Each item or program is described by country, title or message, type of material, date, language and size.

The new catalog follows on the successful launch in October 2001 of a comprehensive web site that contains more than 5,000 items from over 400 organizations for professionals working to end violence against women (www.endvaw.org). The End Violence Against Women web site was developed by JHU/CCP with the support of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and in cooperation with UNIFEM.
