Johns Hopkins Center For Communication Programs Welcomes
New Director; Dr. Jane Bertrand to Succeed Dr. Phyllis Piotrow

Leadership Change Takes Place on January 1

BALTIMORE—The Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs (JHU/CCP) is pleased to announce that Jane Bertrand, PhD, MBA, a leading international health expert, will become the new director of the organization on January 1, 2002.

Dr. Bertrand will succeed Phyllis Tilson Piotrow, PhD, who founded and developed JHU/CCP into a $50-million-year center with a staff of 470 people working in 30 countries worldwide. Dr. Piotrow will retire December 31, 2001, but continue her work as a Professor with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the Department of Population and Family Health Sciences, where Dr. Bertrand will also hold a faculty position.

“I am honored to continue the work of an influential figure in the field of international public health,” said Dr. Bertrand. “Phyllis has been a pioneer in transforming information, education and communication activities into the respected scientific discipline of strategic behavior change communication, which is now recognized as a major component in most public health programs around the world.”

Dr. Bertrand—a graduate of Brown University, the University of Chicago and Tulane University—is an expert in the fields of international family planning, applied research, and strategic health communication. Fluent in French and Spanish, she has dedicated the majority of her career to research on reproductive health in developing countries.

From 1994-99, she chaired the Department of International Health and Development, the largest department within the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine both in terms of student enrollment and sponsored research. She earned her MBA from Tulane University in August 2001.

“I cannot think of a better person to take the reins here at JHU/CCP,” said Dr. Piotrow. “Jane's research and evaluation work has established worldwide benchmarks for quality services and communication in the field of reproductive health.”
