FDA Approval of Monthly Injectable

P:On the bus this morning I overheard two women discussing a new injectablecontraceptive recently approved by the USFDA. Has one been approved?

R:Yes. The FDA has just (October, 2000) approved the Pharmacia product "Lunelle," a monthly injectable also known as Cyclofem which was developed with help from WHO. Cyclofem uses the same progestin as Depo-Provera (but at a substantially lower dose) along with a small amount of fairly short-acting estrogen which provides somewhat more regular bleeding patterns.
