More Breastfeeding and Progestin-Only Pills

P:The high effectiveness of POPs during brestfeeding is an advantage, but I understand POPs are supposed to be taken at the same time every day. That sounds like a problem to me, especially for women in developing countries. If women are breastfeeding, do POPs have to be taken at the same time every day?

R:No. POPs may be taken at any time of the day for effective use during breastfeeding. Again, this is because of the apparent synergy between the contraceptive effects of the POPs and breastfeeding. However, it may help women to remember to take a pill every day, and to try to take it at the same time each day.
