Jim Shelton's Pearls

February 04, 2003

Country Success Story

P:What country has seen an impressive increase in contraceptive prevalence from 31% in 1995 to 43% in 2002? (As well as a decrease in total fertility from 5.1 to 4.4, a decrease in infant mortality from 51 to 39, and an increase in "complete" immunization coverage for children 12-23 from 43% to 63%.)

R:Guatemala.

It appears some health professionals have been doing some excellent work, including USAID mission staff and many other colleagues. Congratulations!!

(These data are based on the 1995 DHS and the 2002 RHS supported by CDC.)
