JHU∙CCP is pleased to announce that it will be leading Malaria Powerbrokers, a new two-year, $3 million malaria advocacy project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Malaria Powerbrokers builds upon the successes of Voices for a Malaria-free Future, a project led by CCP from 2006-2011, and the United Against Malaria campaign, which uses soccer as the catalyst to raise global awareness and galvanize worldwide commitment to end malaria deaths by 2015.

At the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Ghana's national team helped United Against Malaria share prevention and treatment messages and raise funds for long-lasting insecticide treated nets.

Malaria Powerbrokers seeks to expand the national movements of powerful private and public sector leaders in four African countries—Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda—who collectively motivate African governments to use available resources (domestic, donor and private sector) more efficiently to scale up effective malaria control, laying the foundation for eventual elimination.

CCP’s activities will include:

  • Cultivating strong champions among UAM private sector partners;
  • Building advocacy skills among UAM partners and collecting data on malaria control’s return on investment;
  • Inspiring partners to become malaria advocates;
  • Developing advocacy opportunities such as UAM football events to motivate government leaders to use donor resources more efficiently.
