An old proverb says it takes a village to raise a child; likewise, it takes local leadership and advocacy to stop malaria in outlying regions. That’s the idea behind the District Malaria Advocacy Team, or DMAT. DMAT seeks to foster collaboration among district health teams, government officials, business and religious leaders, and NGOs at the local level, where malaria’s toll is most often felt in Africa. Meeting for the first time in August 2010, the Mtwara DMAT in Tanzania are already taking concrete actions to lower malaria rates in their community.
