ZAMBIA
Message Harmonization
Activity Dates
August 2004 – September 2010
Activity Summary
HCP Zambia works to harmonize and prioritize health communication messages so that health messages shared through a variety of communication channels are both consistent and supportive of community-led dialogue and problem solving to effect lasting behavior change. The following approaches are employed for BCC coordination and harmonization.
- Key roles in MOH committees focusing on child health, HIV and AIDS, malaria, family planning and reproductive health—identifying and responding to gaps in/needs for communication materials including the support of national, regional and international commemorations and yearly campaigns
- Support to other U.S. government-funded projects in the development of materials related to malaria, HIV and AIDS, child health and family planning and reproductive health
Child Health Weeks
This week-long intervention is held twice a year and provides health promotion and care to children under 5 years old. Health focuses include vitamin A supplementation, growth monitoring, immunizations, de-worming, maternal-neonatal tetanus, antenatal care, re-treatment of ITNs, and community health education. HCP provides planning and technical support to DHMTs, as well as transportation to areas that are harder to reach.
Measles Campaign July 2007
HCP produced 4 posters, apron and T-shirt designs, caretaker information, radio and TV spots and a documentary film to support the needed mass response to this campaign. Following the campaign, HCP produced a parent/caretaker handbook: Your Child’s Health Depends on You.
HIV Talkline
The HIV Talkline is a 24-hour toll-free service available to all provinces. It provides information, education, and counseling about HIV and AIDS to callers. HCP Zambia supports HIV Talkline by covering some operational costs. The program helps to mobilize people to seek counseling and testing and to provide them with accurate information concerning HIV and AIDS.
Positive Living Handbook
HCP Zambia worked with various stakeholders to develop The Positive Living Handbook to communicate positive living skills and build capacity to understand the complexities of ARV treatment and its implications for health care and home-based care providers as well as PLHA, their families and communities. As of 2006, HCP distributed almost 60,000 copies of the handbook throughout Zambia, including all Ministries, institutions of higher learning as well as other donor agencies and stakeholders. The handbook was awarded the Red Ribbon Leadership Excellence Award for communications in December 2006.
Road to Hope
The Road to Hope is a waiting room video developed and filmed with stakeholder involvement to provide messages on ART adherence. Road to Hope showcases three stories that shed light on the reality faced by Zambians who have tested HIV positive and make the journey towards accessing and adhering to antiretroviral therapy. Through the voices of positive Zambians, this film shows the struggles and triumphs of being on ART as part of the process of living positively with HIV. This film is designed to educate people through the voices of those who have lived through the process of initiating and remaining on treatment. The video won the 2007 New York Festivals International Film and Video Silver Medal for Healthcare in February 2006. Available in English, Nyanja, Bemba, Lozi, Tonga, Luvale, Kaonde, and Lunda.
Mwana Wanga
Mwana Wanga is a thought-provoking 3-part video that focuses on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV during pregnancy, delivery and the post-natal period. The video tries to advise pregnant women to know their HIV status, what to do if they find they are pregnant and HIV positive, and what to expect at antenatal clinics during delivery and during the post-natal period. Available in English, Bemba, Nyanja, Lozi and Tonga.
Tikambe
Tikambe (Let’s Talk About It) explores how HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination are affecting ordinary Zambians’ lives. This video provides a personal and compelling portrait of people who are ordinary, candid, strong and brave in sharing their personal experiences. These are the stories of real people, not actors. This film won the 2004 Silver Hugo for Best Non-Broadcast Documentary at the Chicago Film Festival’s Intercom Competition and the 2005 New York Festivals International Film and Video Silver Medal for Health and Medical Issues. Available in English, Nyanja and Bemba.
Our Family Our Choice
Our Family Our Choice aims to help people who are HIV positive make informed choices about their fertility. This includes the importance of parents knowing their HIV status (ideally before getting pregnant) as well as decision-making around having a child or not, when to have a child, and the steps to take to ensure the least risk to the health of the mother and the child. Available in English, Bemba, Nyanja, Kaonde, Lozi, Lunda, Luvale, and Tonga.
Flipchart for Client Education
The Flipchart for Client Education is a counseling tool that can be used by health workers, adherence counselors, peer educators and trained support group members to educate people about, and discuss issues around, HIV prevention, treatment and care. While this flipchart is primarily designed for PLHA and their caregivers, the information is relevant for anyone who wishes to learn more about these topics. It is distributed to ART sites, PLHA support groups, NGOs, mobile video units and workplaces with peer educators.
