ZAMBIA
Leadership
Activity Dates
2004-2007
Activity Summary
HCP Zambia’s strategic approach to leadership targets leaders at all levels – religious leaders, traditional leaders and local community leaders such as teachers or those mobilizing around a health issue. Some of these activities began with a country-wide launch to mobilize leaders at a national level, followed by a subsequent focus on working the influencers of opinion/behavior at a community level.
Care and Compassion Movement
The Care and Compassion Movement partners with religious leaders to promote caring and understanding among their congregants for people living with HIV and AIDS. Radio and TV spots showcase religious leaders from several faiths and sects urging a compassionate response based on scripture and religious teachings.
Psychosocial Counseling
Religious leaders raise awareness in their congregations and communities about health issues including HIV and AIDS. Local religious leaders received training on psychosocial counseling (see below) and tools to help their constituents respond to the needs of PLHA in their communities. The counselors promote discussion through sermons, couples’ meetings, as well as individual counseling sessions. So far, this program has reached over 111,000 and is still expanding.
Local Traditional Leadership
HCP District Program Officers have engaged with all of the chiefdoms in areas where HCP is working. In some places, the chiefs are directly involved in capacity building training. In other places, the chiefs have led action for testing. The chiefs use of their authority to advocate for positives change has simultaneously provided them with a visible positive role as well as empowered communities to take positive actions for health.
In February 2006, the Barotse Royal Establishment in Western Province invited HCP to facilitate a workshop which would develop a strategy for them to address the issues of HIV and AIDS. This workshop was attended by 38 Indunas/chiefs, 12 officials from the Ministry of Health in Western Province, a representative of the provincial AIDS task force, and other key officials and stakeholders leading HIV and AIDS programs.
