ART Communication: Support to the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC)
Activity Dates
2004-2007
Activity Summary
HCP has been providing technical assistance to the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) since 2005 to improve AIDS treatment literacy and strengthen adherence to ART through a multi channel communication initiative called Treat for Life.
In 2005, HCP assisted JCRC to design a communication strategy that identified the following communication issues:
- Basic ART Knowledge & Information
- Early Treatment Seeking behavior
- Adherence
- Prevention for PLHA
- Stigma reduction
- Pediatric ART
The first phase Treat for Life campaign focused on the first four areas. Launched in January, 2006, the first phase campaign included radio talk shows with ART providers and clients as guest speakers, radio spots, posters, billboards, a logo and signboards labeling TREAT sites, booklets and leaflets for clients, and a song by popular singer Rachael Magoola.
The second phase of the campaign is focusing on the last two themes: stigma reduction and ART for children and adolescents. According to a review of literature conducted by HCP in 2006, stigma and discrimination remain key barriers to disclosure of status and the successful uptake and adherence to ART. Children with HIV/AIDS, many of whom are orphans, are particularly vulnerable to stigmatization and discrimination by their school mates and caretakers.
