South Africa
Outreach and Preventative Treatment Program
Activity Dates
2006 – ongoing
Activity Summary
Mothusimpilo is a community intervention program in the Carletonville mining area that aims to reduce the community prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the incidence of HIV infection and sustain these reductions through enhanced information, education and counseling activities and effective STI services.
In November 2005 USAID funded the STI Reference Centre (STIRC) at the South African National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) to undertake a pilot project to introduce HIV voluntary testing and counseling to marginalized women at high risk in the Carletonville mining area. The pilot took place from November 2005 to September 2006. Provision of VCT to women at high risk in the high transmission areas resulted in a demand for accessible VCT and comprehensive HIV services. The current Mothusimpilo program aims to provide VCT and ARV services to men and women in informal settlements in the high transmission areas surrounding the mines and farming communities.
Objectives
- Promote and reinforce awareness of HIV/STI risk and risk reduction strategies
- Establish accessible and quality HIV testing and counseling
- Ensure accessible STI diagnosis and treatment
- Strengthen program management capacity including monitoring and evaluation
Implementation
- Mobile VCT services
- VCT and ARV outreach in marginalized areas
- Quality management and periodic presumptive treatment (PPT) for STIs
- Condom promotion and distribution. Mothusimpilo uses a unique strategy for condom promotion in which they teach clients how to use condoms before distributing, and then follow-up in a week to see how they felt about their condom use experience.
- Peer education using peer support group model and drama, picture codes, and other interactive methodologies
- Education in hostels, taverns, bars, workplace programs, other settings
- Job training for woman at high risk
