The Orality Project
Activity Dates
2002-2004
Overview
HCP was asked by the Office of HIV/AIDS to review Voice for Humanity’s (VFH) concept of using innovative technology (a low-cost digital audio player) to present information on HIV/AIDS in an oral rather than printed format. HCP provided technical assistance for the development of an overall strategic communication approach and design as well as the messages and content. The objectives of the programs that were recorded for the audio player were: to raise awareness about the facts of HIV/AIDS transmission, healthy living, and risk reducing behaviors; to raise compassion for people living with HIV/AIDS by making others aware of how there are consequences for all from the disease, and how they are being directly affected; to reduce blame and fortify support for PLWHA, particularly from a spiritual perspective; and to provide doable ideas of things that community members can do to help.
With appropriate content on the audio players, VFH then trained facilitators of listening groups to use the device in communities in Nasarawa State. Their use in these communities was then assessed to determine if this technology was appropriate for disseminating HIV/AIDS information in a low-literacy setting. The findings from this assessment are found in the reports listed below.
