Nicaragua
Understanding and Preventing Trafficking of People
Activity Dates
April 2003 - March 2004
Activity Summary
At USAID/Nicaragua’s request, HCP conducted a partial assessment on trafficking of people in Nicaragua. The assessment provided information on the depth and scale of trafficking in the country. HCP also assisted the Anti-Trafficking Coalition (80 organizations) in developing a strategy that worked at the policy level to advocate for the adoption of the international protocol for anti-trafficking and lobby for stricter laws and new guidelines for repatriation of victims. At the service level, a new anti-trafficking office was opened as a referral site for victims and their families, as well as a central location for the coalition activities. The first ever case identification system was also designed and deployed. At the individual/community level a campaign was aired to create awareness on trafficking activities.
