Nicaragua
Reducing the Information Gap between Health Authorities and Citizens
Activity Dates
July 2003 - June 2004
Activity Summary
Using the Household Survey on Corruption – conducted with support from the USAID/Nicaragua Office of Democratic Initiatives – HCP identified citizens’ perceptions regarding corruption in the health system that limited their access to the benefits of health care or health information. HCP also conducted an analysis on flow of information regarding health data and the use of resources within the health system. The results of these studies: (1) guided the design of advocacy activities promoting transparency within the health sector; (2) encouraged proper devolution of health information to the community; and (3) provided the basis to strengthen civil society mechanisms for compliance with health policies and established quality standards.
Special activities were also conducted with the press as catalysts to reduce information gaps by facilitating widespread diffusion of information regarding crucial topics on health management (including the correct use of medications) at the national and local level.
