Linking with academia to fight HIV/AIDS: Building HIV/AIDS Communication Capacity to Launch the Be Faithful and Partner Reduction Campaign

Activity Dates

2005-2006

Activity Summary

The National AIDS Council (CNCS) invited the Communication and Art Department at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) to become an active partner in the development of the CNCS HIV/AIDS Communication Strategy. CNCS’s strategic and long-term vision correctly ascertained the need for building and sustaining local capacity to design, manage, and evaluate the HIV/AIDS Communication Strategy. UEM’s privileged position in Mozambique contributed to the following areas: setting the public agenda for HIV/AIDS; providing correct information about HIV/AIDS transmission and protective behaviors among young men and women, faculty, and university workers; and advocating for other higher education institutions to become involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Process Implementation

In conjunction with CNCS, HCP supported UEM’s involvement in developing the National HIV/AIDS Communication Strategy. Three major programmatic interventions were implemented to expand the role of the University as a key social player in the fight against HIV/AIDS:

  1. Build strategic HIV/AIDS and health communication capacity among UEM faculty members. For instance, two UEM faculty and two CNCS professionals participated in CCP’s "Leadership in Strategic Health Communication."
  2. Design and implement the first hands-on HIV/AIDS Strategic Communication course at UEM. Thirty-five students took the first 25-session course.
  3. Launch the first HIV/AIDS communication campaign on campus. Based on the knowledge gained from the communication course, students led the design and implementation of "AIDS is more than Stress… Bet on Fidelity" which focused on couple fidelity, partner reduction and personal risk perception. The campaign opened with a panel discussion during which prominent professors, UEM authorities and students looked at the following issues: the effects of the epidemic on youth and university students, the need to adopt healthy protective behaviors, and role models for future generations. "AIDS is more than Stress… Bet on Fidelity" received large TV and radio coverage.
