The Media/Materials Clearinghouse (M/MC)
The Media/Materials Clearinghouse (M/MC) has a unique role in the world of health communication, actively gathering outstanding examples of health communication materials and products and making these items accessible to professionals worldwide. An evaluation in 2004 found that the M/MC is extremely valuable in supporting the mission of HCP and is most effectively serving its mission of harnessing the development experience, serving its clientele efficiently and effectively, and providing otherwise unavailable resources to professionals worldwide.
The M/MC offers the following services:
-
HEALTH COMMUNICATION MATERIALS DATABASE: M/MC staff will actively seek the latest health communication materials using a selection process that requires evidence of effectiveness. In order to enrich the information available in the M/MC's database, and to develop this resource further as a tool for those working in the field, staff also add formative research and pretesting information / results to all records of HCP materials. Records that include the "whole story" of the material--formative research, pretesting, as well as impact evaluation results--will be included and promoted as a branded toolbox ("Golden Toolbox" ) which will be a new feature on the M/MC website.
-
"IN THE SPOTLIGHT": M/MC sends out a monthly "In the Spotlight" e-mail to over 1,000 public health professionals to highlight exemplary work in health communication.
-
HEALTH COMMUNICATION MATERIALS NETWORK (HCMN): M/MC staff manage the HCMN, accessible at the M/MC website, which is a forum for health communication specialists to share ideas, information, and samples of health communication materials with colleagues. This active network presently has over 1,200 members.
-
REQUESTS FOR MATERIALS: M/MC staff meet over 900 requests yearly for sample materials; approximately 600 health professionals visit the M/MC each year.
-
REQUESTS FOR ASSISTANCE: As recognized experts in the establishment and maintenance of multi-media collections, M/MC staff are called upon to advise and train overseas professionals in setting up and running their own resource centers. The M/MC offers one- and two-week study tours for specialists at the M/MC in Baltimore; and M/MC staff will provide technical assistance overseas if expenses are covered by the requester.
-
WEBSITE: The M/MC website, www.m-mc.org, attracts thousands of visitors each month and remains at the top of Google's list for health communication materials.
