Improving Home-Based Care of Malaria
Activity Dates
2002-2003
Activity Summary
In order to increase the ability of rural and peri-urban mothers to manage home-based care of children with malaria, HCP carried out a home-based care for malaria campaign. To assure coordination of malaria interventions, HCP collaborated with BASICS2 and NETMARK in areas such as research. The home-based care campaign included a 26 episode weekly radio magazine show (He Ha Ho - Healthier, Happier Home) and an advocacy component for government and community leaders.
He Ha Ho also included four TV spots on how to treat malaria in children under five years. Each spot, two in English and two in Twi is about 60 seconds long. It carries the message that the presence of fever in under-fives is likely to be malaria. Mothers are advised to crush chloroquine with something sweet for the child. This should be repeated on the second and third day. If the child is not better by the third day, mothers are advised to go straight to the nearest clinic or hospital for medical attention.
