Activity Summary
The "Life Choices" Family Planning intervention aimed to increase use of modern family planning methods in urban and peri-urban areas by addressing barriers to contraceptive use through mass media and community-level activities. Responding to issues identified in the Ghana DHS and other studies, the Life Choices media campaign emphasized a wide range of contraceptive options available, as well as social support for family planning use, through a variety of high profile media channels, including TV and radio spots and print materials. Community and clinic programs reinforced the Life Choices messages with community rallies and activities at clinics and women’s clubs. The Life Choices intervention was designed to address the role of family planning in various life stages, e.g., waiting to have children, spacing children.
The campaign featured key messages focusing on dispelling misinformation about modern contraceptive methods and building social support for FP. Satisfied FP users were featured prominently in campaign activities. HCP developed and produced a reality-based TV show documenting the lives of satisfied users across Ghana. The show, called “Vox Pop” (Voice of the People) was aired on national television stations. A music video of the popular “It’s Your Life, It’s Your Choice” song was produced to provide continued attention to the on-going FP campaign messages.
