A Fourteen-Year-Old Helps A Friend Avoid Female Circumcision
Workitu Bogale is a fourteen-year-old, 6th grade student who lives in the Oromia Region in Ethiopia. She was selected and trained in the Beacon Schools Program and with her new skills is able to help her community, especially in teaching her peers about the consequences of harmful traditional practices.
One day during Workitu's regular teaching sessions, a friend told her that her parents had made an appointment for this girl to have her circumcision. Workitu was very saddened and tried to talk to the girl's parents but they wouldn't listen.
Taking matters into her own hands, Workitu brought the issue to the others at her Beacon School. The trainers discussed the situation and passed it on to local administration. The local officials agreed to talk with the girl's parents. Together, the School trainers and local officials managed to persuade the girl's parents to cancel the circumcision.
