A Young Mother Manages Her Family's Health
Hanaa Ali Mohamed is 19 years old, married, and has been a member of the CHL-sponsored Ante-natal and Post-partum Care Program over the last 4 months. This intervention helps couples to plan and manage their first pregnancy, through the delivery and postpartum periods, which are crucial areas for helping to lower maternal and childhood illness.
Hanaa described how she first asked her husband's permission to attend the program: "I have learned the skill of negotiation, so I spoke with my husband about benefits of attending those sessions. I explained to him the important information which is useful for my health and my child as well."
Since her attendance at the training began, she mentioned specifically learning about the following:
- Importance of cleanliness during pregnancy and delivery
- Importance of preparation for safe delivery
- Proper nutrition
- Recognizing symptoms of complications
"Now, I am used to having cereals, fruits and vegetables more than before. Also, I don't sit with my husband when he smokes, so he's quit smoking. I don't expose my self to insecticides, I wash things well, and I keep my daughter clean and don't let her walk with bare feet."
"And, I have been speaking with my neighbors about all these things that I have learned..."
