A Young Man Takes Responsibility for His Life
Rubaiat Al Rabbi reads in class nine at Palardi High School, Gournadi, Barisal. Before participating in an ARH Life Skills Workshop, Rubaiat was not attentive in his studies and did not go to school regularly. He used to spend most of his time hanging out with his friends. He had also begun smoking heavily and taking drugs. He thought this was the popular and "right" thing to do and that these habits were signs of manliness.
His addiction to cigarettes and drugs resulted in his stealing money from his parents to get what he needed. His parents were very concerned.
Then Rubaiat participated in a four-day Life Skills Workshop supported by BCCP, and he began a period of reflection and learning about himself and those around him. In particular, the session on "What my family expects of me?" affected him powerfully. Through that session he began reflecting on his behavior and how it was affecting his parents. He became aware of his negative habits and how they were affecting his own health and those around him.
At first it was difficult for him to change - as he was addicted and closely tied in with a group of friends who were as well. But from the Life Skills Workshop he learned that sometimes we have to face difficulties in our life.
With strong willpower, he realized that he could overcome any problem that arose and become who he wanted to be. After much hard work and commitment, Rubaiat is now going to school regularly and doesn't spend much time with his old friends. When he does however, he shares his realizations and learning with his friends and tries to help them as well.
His parents are very happy with him now and proud of what their son has done.
