Year: 2002
Author:Somayajulu UV

Community participation has led to success of the project through change in the behaviour of the poor and illiterate people living in the slums.  The importance given to the outreach services led to better utilisation of the RCH services and improved accessibility of the services to the slum population. Sustainability of the project is ensured to some extent by the initiative of the community to own the UHC through user charges and other initiatives. Involvement of NGOs led to greater accountability in spite of lower cost. This project can be replicated effectively with proper mechanism for supervision and monitoring of the project activities. Communication has played a major role in bringing in the change in the behaviour of the women. Better and effective communication led to empowerment of women through better knowledge and utilisation of the services.
