Nepal has greater diversity of terrain, culture and language than any other country of comparable size. About one half of the total population of 24 million is concentrated along the southern terrain/valley which comprises a fraction of the nation's total area. The total fertility rate is 4.1 live births per woman (2001).
Overall, the contraceptive prevalence rate in Nepal is estimated at 38.9% (2001). It is also estimated that 27.8% (2001) of currently married women in Nepal have an unmet need for family planning, that is that they desire to either space or limit the next birth but are not using a family planning method.
