Quality First! Expo at CCP The first ever JHU/CCP Qualtiy First! Expo was held October 12. The event was a big hit with many participants, both internal and external. Regional and divisional exhibits were set up in the M/MC to showcase a wide selection of CCP programmatic lessons learned, findings, resources and tools related to quality.

Netlinks is the M/MC's online database of 1400+ internet resources related to public health. Check out over 40 new resources added this month including the Beyond Awareness Campaign in South Africa, Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health from UNESCO-Bangkok, the International Union for Health Promotion and Education website, and Real Lives, IPPF's South Asia Region's online magazine which highlights sexual and reproductive health needs and rights in South Asia.
Declaration Adopted at EE2000 Event Arnhem and Amsterdam, The Netherlands (September 23, 2000) - The Third International EE conference concluded in the early hours of September 22, 2000 with the adoption of a Declaration of Commitment to the advancement of the field of EE. The conference drew entertainment professionals, academic representatives and field practitioners of EE from 27 countries for five days of intensive meetings, presentations, debates, films, music, and discussion.
UNFPA Executive Director Initiates Fellowship Program at Johns Hopkins On October 5, UNFPA Executive Director, Dr. Nafis Sadik, delivered the Dean's Lecture entitled "Reproductive Health and Family Planning in the Age of HIV/AIDS: the Future of UNFPA," which launched the Nafis Sadik Leadership Fellows Program. She addressed a standing-room only crowd in the Becton Dickinson Lecture Hall at the School of Hygiene and Public Health.

From Bangladesh to Sacramento - Green Umbrellas and Sustainable Population In a unique application of Lessons without Borders, a group in Sacramento, California, used the green umbrella concept from Bangladesh. The Green Umbrella Campaign launched in Bangladesh by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Bangladesh, with technical assistance from the Johns Hopkins University Population Communication Services (JHU/PCS) and managed by the Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs.
Red Ribbon Question Mark Campaign Wins Three National Awards The Red Ribbon Question Mark Campaign to encourage at-risk individuals to get tested for HIV has won three awards in a national competition for "excellence in public health communication." The campaign was developed for the Maryland AIDS Administration, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs.
TV spots in Egypt reach audiences nationwide during Ramadan The Minister of Information has taken the unprecedented step of directing Egypt TV to continue the family planning and reproductive health campaign through Ramadan, a period when public service spots are usually taken off the air to make room for special programming. Five of the ten spots promote Gold Star Clinics as providers of services for young people.
Featured new materials from India, Peru, Nicaragua, and Hong Kong More than 80 new materials have been added to Mediabank, including images of posters and pamphlets with descriptions and contact information. Other additions include two audiotapes and pamphlets from Guatemala and Mexico. The Nicaragua materials feature a series of pamphlets contraceptive methods and were produced by Asociacin Pro Bienestar de la Familia Nicaragense (PROFAMILIA), Johns Hopkins University (JHU/PCS), and USAID.
At APHA Meeting, JHU/CCP Researchers Examine Many Facets of Communication JHU/CCP researchers, program officers, and trainers look at reproductive health communication from many different angles in presentations at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in Boston Nov. 12-16. JHU/CCP Proposes One-of-a-Kind Online Community for Reproductive Health Professionals Reproductive health professionals now have an opportunity to develop and participate in their own online community! The Center for Communication Programs has posted a Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a world- wide moderated Usenet newsgroup devoted specifically to those in the reproductive health field. The RFD is posted in the news.groups newsgroup, where all discussion of this proposal should take place. The RFD is also available online in PDF and TEXT format.
JHU/CCP Joins Voice of America and Black Entertainment Television in HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign in Africa This unique venture will include concerts with local and international talent, teen town meetings, and public service announcements centered around the December 1 World AIDS Day. Dr. Karusa Kiragu, a behavior change communication specialist at JHU/CCP, described the unique role that local media have to play in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa at the November 14 press conference in Washington D.C.
POPLINE repackaging exercise helps create "e-books" At a POPLINE training workshop in India facilitated by the International Institute for Population Sciences, a special repackaging exercise allowed participants to digitize a document their organization had published. These new skills will enable participants to create a mini-library of their publications by downloading and reusing POPLINE abstracts and keywords for documents produced by their colleagues and creating links from that bibliographic information to the corresponding digitized documents.
