Overview

ZIHP developed the FACEAIDS program for HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention in the workplace based on information collected from an informal survey among 71 organizations, private and public, based in the states of Cooperbelt and Lusaka. Seventy-three percent of the companies interviewed stated that they did not have any HIV/AIDS education programs. The need was present, and there was universal support for such a program.

Objectives

• Presentation of overview and impact of HIV/AIDS in Zambia to highlight the magnitude of this issue.
• Build awareness through educational materials at work sites about HIV/AIDS prevention
• Conducting group HIV/AIDS education and prevention sessions.
• Training of peer educators.
• Distribution and promotion of male and female condoms.
• Provision of information on VCT to motivate employees to take advantage of the services and know their own status for a healthier lifestyle.
• Providing information on family planning and dual protection.
• Assisting in the formulation of an HIV/AIDS policy for the organization.
• Promotion of the Red Ribbon at the workplace.
  

Activities

Four sessions were held during the period under review at three different workplaces, and 150 people were reached.

ZIHP also signed a memorandum of understanding with three employers. Those employers represent a total work force of approximately 300 employees. ZIHP will expand its staffing levels in this area to meet the existing demand.

Outputs

Six brochures have been produced

• What is HIV/AIDS?
• How to be safe from HIV/AIDS
• How do I know if I have HIV/AIDS?
• Positive Living with HIV/AIDS
• Know about STDs
• Know about HIV/AIDS (composite brochure)

Memorandums of understanding have been signed with each of the three employers.

Impact

Employees and employers have become more knowledgeable about causes, transmission, and prevention of HIV and AIDS.

Unique Features

Employers are asking for programs like FACEAIDS.

Future Plans

Expansion of program when additional monies and other resources become available. Pre/post intervention evaluations are planned.
