Overview

Recognizing that FP clinics are often the primary connection women of reproductive age and youth have with the health care system, and that HIV/AIDS is endemic in most African countries, SFPS/BCC works to increase the capacity of FP service providers to council their clients on issues concerning STI and HIV/AIDS. This includes providing training and resource materials to aid providers in talking about sensitive issues and difficult topics and in raising the topic of dual protection, that is, being protected from both unwanted pregnancies and STI and HIV/AIDS.

Objectives

• Increase the capacity of FP service providers to counsel their clients in matters concerning STI and HIV/AIDS.
• Enable FP clients to help their clients assess their risk for HIV/AIDS and to make a plan to avoid infection.
• Increase referral to other STI and HIV/AIDS services, including VCT, hotlines, and STI clinics.
  

Activities

• Research with FP providers on barriers and challenges to counseling clients on STI and HIV/AIDS.
• Training of FP service providers in integrated FP/ STI/ HIV/ AIDS.
• Production and dissemination of the risk assessment/ risk reduction (RA/RR) tool.
• Training in the use of the RA/RR tool.
• Development of video on "Challenges in Counseling" targeting FP service providers to help with HIV/AIDS and youth counseling techniques.

Outputs

• Report on research findings from qualitative research with FP providers.
• RA/RR tool in English and French, including tear-off sheet for clients.
• Integrated FP/STI/HIV/AIDS IPC/C training manual.
• Script for video on "Challenges in AIDS Counseling."
