COUNTRY OVERVIEW

Nigeria is home to an estimated 135 million people belonging to more than 250 ethnic groups; the following are the most populous and politically influential: Hausa and Fulani 29%, Yoruba 21%, Igbo (Ibo) 18%, Ijaw 10%, Kanuri 4%, Ibibio 3.5%, Tiv 2.5%. Approximately 42% of the country’s population is under the age of 15, and another 55% are between the ages of 15-49. Nigeria’s young age distribution is due in part to its high fertility; the average number of children that a woman in Uganda gives birth to in her lifetime is estimated at 5.45.

Like in other sub-Saharan countries, HIV/AIDS is a serious problem in Nigeria. Also like other African nations, the majority of infections are transmitted through heterosexual sex. Nigeria’s prevalence rate is 5.4%, with 3.6 million people living with HIV/AIDS.  Malaria, along with low utilization of routine immunization and family planning, are serious health issues.

CCP has been working in Nigeria since 1983. The Center’s first contributions in the country focused on strategic communication for family planning and reproductive health initiatives. Since then CCP has expanded its communication expertise to include HIV/AIDS, child survival, safe motherhood, malaria, gender, education and democracy and governance. The Center’s Nigerian programs have recorded notable and demonstrable impact toward improving the quality of life of Nigerians.

CCP collaborates with an array of organizations in Nigeria including federal ministries, national, state and local government authorities, community-and faith-based organizations, women's groups, youth and youth-advocacy groups, and media and research organizations.  As a partner in multiple Nigerian programs, CCP offers technical assistance in:
