COUNTRY OVERVIEW
Côte d’Ivoire was one of the four focus countries of the regional Family Health and AIDS Prevention (SFPS) project that ran from 1995 to 2003. During the first five years, the focus was primarily on family planning, reproductive health (prevention and treatment of STIs, including HIV) and child health (diarrheal disease, immunization, etc.). From 2000 to 2003, the project became more focused on youth and HIV/AIDS. The youth campaign in Côte d’Ivoire carried the message, “Love without risk is PL..U.S.” (Plan, Use services, Share information with others).
In 2004, CCP provided technical assistance to develop a National HIV/AIDS Behavior Change Communication Strategy. In July 2005, CCP reopened a field office in Côte d’Ivoire with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Its mandate was to provide technical assistance to the development of behavior change communication (BCC) capacity in the AIDS Ministry. Specifically, CCP was asked to lead the development of a youth campaign to increase abstinence, delay of sexual debut, and reduce sexual partners; to build capacity of community-based organizations/nongovernmental organizations (CBOs/NGOs) to conduct effective prevention outreach; and to assist the National HIV/AIDS Care and Support Program with training and job aids for community counselors.
